Cascadia Hummingbird Report 02/25/2002

The most amazing news comes from Nanaimo, British Columbia were
2 male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS appeared on 2-20, 2 weeks ahead of the
previous first detection record. Overall Rufous densities are
still very low with no reports yet between Astoria and Nanaimo
and no confirmed sightings between Newport and Astoria. The
arrival of the first male to the Willamette Valley in South Eugene,
OR was right about on time, but the appearance of a male at Mt
Tabor in Portland (at the north end of the valley) was a bit early
with no reports in between.

S. Eugene, OR 02-18-2002 49 44.0162 123.1079
Nanaimo, BC 02-20-2002 51 49.1667 123.9333
Portland (Mt Tabor), OR 02-25-2002 56 45.5115 122.5985

In flower news, the first Salmonberry (_Rubus spectabilis_) blooms
appeared at one of the monitoring sites in Astoria this week, about
a week ahead of last year. A sweep of likely hummingbird spots in
Cannon Beach found blooming ornamental azaleas and Cardamine sp.(?),
but no hummingbirds. Hairy Manzanita (_Arctostaphylos columbiana_)
is blooming on south slopes on Vancouver Island, BC.
