Competition is probably too strong a word for the effort
made by Todd Thornton and me this year. We both worked
pretty hard at covering the county, and did so in a very
cooperative fashion.

The previous 1 year record for Clatsop County, set by Todd
last year was 239. We had both passed that number this year
by the end of September. I finished the year a 247 and Todd,
who actually had to hold down a non-birding job while looking
for birds, managed 252 species. Our combined total would
easily pass 260.

Best birds for the year (not necessarily seen by both
of us) included:

Yellow-billed Loon
White-faced Ibis
Black-crowned Night-heron
Ross' Goose
Tufted Duck
Red-shouldered Hawk (I actually saw at least 2)
Gyrfalcon
Sandhill Crane
Snowy Owl
Black-chinned Hummingbird
Lewis' Woodpecker
Tropical Kingbird
Northern Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
Tennesee Warbler
Northern Waterthrush
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Clay-colored Sparrow

And the big miss for both of us was the Gearhart BROAD-BILLED
HUMMINGBIRD.
