My first bird of the year, if I don't count the crows I heard while still
in bed, was none other than an Anna's Hummingbird at my feeder, she beat a
House Sparrow by a fraction of a second. At 9:30 there were 3 Annas using
the feeder at the same time, a rare show of cooperation. Before noon I
counted 37 species of birds at the locks, golden gardens and at home so it
was a pretty good start to the new year. Nothing unusual, a Bald Eagle up
on Sunset Hill, a Northern Shoveler and a male Hooded Merganser at the
pond, 26 Barrow's Goldeneyes and one Common Goldeneye at the locks as well
as the Greater White-fronted Goose that's been there for some time.
