Greetings fellow Tweeters!
I've been in the Galveston, Texas area for the past
two weeks visiting my newest grandson, and came home
to over 150 tweeters messages, so I'm catching up on
all the goings-on.
I did get away for about 5 days of birding and stopped
in at Armand Bayou (near NASA), Anahuac NWR, Brazoria
NWR, High Island, and Brazos Bend SP. Saw 123 species
on the trip, including 9 new life birds for me. These
included the rare and ellusive BLUE JAY which I was
beginning to suspect didn't exist. I'm also happy to
report that the AMERICAN COOT captive breeding and
release program is a HUGE success!! One great
highlight for me was spotting a TUNDRA SWAN at
Brazoria. I couldn't believe it, but I ran into a
fairly knowledgable local birder (I know he was
knowledgable because when I said I was from Seattle,
he asked if I knew an old friend of his, Gene Hunn.
He told me that they get a TUNDRA about once every 10
years, so I was quite thrilled. Saw several small
flocks of BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS as well.
All-in-all a great trip, but it's good to be home.
