Blue Grouse broods use the meadows in August at Sunrise (Mt. Rainier NP) and especially Hurricane Ridge (Olympic NP) near the visitor centers. They can be difficult to locate when they boom from elevated perches in May and June.

Subject: RFI for Blue Grouse and Flammulated Owl

Hello Tweeters,

One of my New Years resolutions is to see Blue Grouse and Flammulated Owl in 2002, and WA just may be the best place to do that. These are the last 2 breeding birds in the lower 48 that I have yet to see and I am ready to make a special trip to see either or both.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as to the best approach, time of year, places (stake-outs), people to contact, etc. For example, when the grouse begin to boom in April, I think it is, is there a place to go where they may be seen farily easily, or is it better to wait until the summer to see them with chicks, or better yet, does someone know of a tree where they are roosting.

Any help appreciated.
