Sunset Beach
Jan 8, 2002 0840-0930hr

I walked Sunset Beach north from the access for about 1 km.
Just beyond the jeep trail that goes up the dunes at the south
edge of Camp Rilea I found a flock of 42 (forty-two) SNOW
BUNTINGS. This is the largest bunting flock I've ever found
in the winter here.

WESTERN GREBES continue to be the species turning up dead most
often on the beach.

Birds seen (in taxonomic order):

Surf Scoter 1200
Northern Harrier 1
Peregrine Falcon 1
Sanderling 62
Western Gull
Glaucous-winged Gull
Northern Flicker 1
American Crow 5
Black-capped Chickadee 2
Chestnut-backed Chickadee 1
Winter Wren 2
Song Sparrow 5
Snow Bunting 42 [1]

Footnotes:

[1] a single flock working the dune edge

Total number of species seen: 13
