Subject: Eared Grebes wintering in eastern Washington?

Tweeters,
Dennis Paulson, in his exzcellent account of an eastern Washington winter
trip, notes with surprise numbers of Eared Grebes on Soap Lake. In my
experience, this is not unusual. What might be unusual is that Soap Lake is
open at this date. It often (usually) freezes as arctic airmasses settle by
the endof December or January. Perhaps this won't occur this winter?
Any Grand Coulee area locals know more about this?
