For those still interested in seeing the BLACK PHOEBE at Julia Butler
Hansen Natl Wildlife Refuge in Wahkiakum County, the bird continues to be
present around the refuge headquarters building. Jason Paulios, Bob
Merrick, and I viewed the bird for about 30 minutes (from 11:15-11:45) on
Wednesday, Jan 9. We had to wait about 90 minutes or more for it to
finally appear. It used the entire front yard and much of the slough
around the HQ building. At least two WHITE-TAILED KITES were also seen.

Anyone driving to the site may be interested to know that a detour is was
located along Route 4 between Cathalmet and Kelso. The detour signs tell
drivers to cross over the Columbia River and continue along Highway 30 to
Astoria. However, we found local drivers using a much more convenient,
but unadvertised, detour route that should save people several hours of
driving time. Simply take the Cameron Creek Rd just east of the
roadblock, go left (west) onto Robinson, then take Mill Creek Rd (or maybe
it was Old Mill Creek Rd.) back to Route 4.
