This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Thursday, January 10th, evening update.

Featured bird is NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH

A late report for January 9th from the Iona Causeway at Sea Island included
a SHORT-EARED OWL and a BARN SWALLOW.

Sightings for Thursday, January 10th

At Reifel Bird Sanctuary, along the entrance road, the 2 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH were still present. Also at Reifel were 1 ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, 1 HERMIT THRUSH, a VIRGINIA RAIL and an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen at 41B Street and Deltaport Way in Delta. On
River Road in Ladner was a BARN OWL. Nearby, on the west side of 72nd
Street, Delta, near the train tracks was a WESTERN GULL.

On the Iona causeway, Sea Island, were 2 BARN SWALLOWS and an AMERICAN
KESTREL. Sixty COMMON REDPOLLS were mixed in a flock of PINE SISKINS while a
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen in a flock of CANADA GEESE.

Sightings for Wednesday, January 9th

From Reifel Bird Sanctuary, along the entrance road were 2 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH. Also at Reifel were 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 2 HUTTON'S
VIREOS, 17 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN
and 1 HERMIT THRUSH.

On 64th Street in Delta, a PRAIRIE FALCON was seen on power lines which
parallel the railway as it crosses 64th. At the south end of 64th were a
CEDAR WAXWING and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen at 41B Street and Deltaport Way in Delta.
Nearby, at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty, were 5 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS and a
WILLET.

In Burnaby, northwest of Lougheed Mall, were 3 COMMON REDPOLLS feeding for
several hours on catkins.

Sightings for Tuesday, January 8th

At the Richmond West Dyke Trail were 4 LONG-EARED OWLS and 3 COMMON
REDPOLLS.

Sightings for Monday, January 7th

The two CRESTED MYNAS were seen at their 2nd and Wylie location.

At the Richmond West Dyke Trail, there were two LONG-EARED OWLS. Nearby, at
Terra Nova Nature Park were 2 CEDAR WAXWINGS.

Sightings for Sunday, January 6th

There were no local sightings.

Out of town, in Ucluelet, in spite of intensive searches in difficult
weather, the BLACK-TAILED GULL has not been relocated.

Sightings for Saturday, January 5th

Out of town, in the harbor at Ucluelet, a BLACK-TAILED GULL was seen. This
bird is extremely rare.

At Iona, a BARN SWALLOW was seen both over the foreshore and over the south
jetty.

At the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty were a SNOW BUNTING, a WILLET, 3 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS and an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK. Two more BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS
were at the Roberts Bank Jetty. A WESTERN GULL was at Lighthouse Park in
Point Roberts.

At the foot of 64th, Boundary Bay, were a GYRFALCON, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS and 5 COMMON REDPOLLS. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in the vicinity
of 72nd Street and 36th Avenue in Delta.

In North Vancouver, a HERMIT THRUSH is being seen in the 900 block of
Clement.

Two CRESTED MYNAS were at their usual 2nd and Wylie location.

At Derby Reach Park in Langley was a singing HUTTON'S VIREO. Nearby, at
208th Street and Allard Crescent were 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS.

For several days, a GLAUCOUS GULL has been frequenting a slough on Nicomen
Island, which is past Hatzic Lake on Highway 7.
