Subject: Kumlien's Gull at Hammond Boat Basin

Lee Cain, Steve Warner and I where sorting through the gull
at Hammond Boat Basin when Lee spotted a very pale 3rd winter
individual sitting on basin jetty.

The mantle and coverts were paler than the average Glaucous-winged.
The primaries were about the same shade (perhaps a bit lighter)
with distinct white tips. We all noted that it looked a bit
"stumpy", short-tailed, short-winged.

There were several (6 or 7) 2nd winter Thayer's Gulls around for
direct comparison (including a very pale one.

I feel confident that this is a KUMLIEN'S GULL and will try to
get video of it. Whether Kumlien's Gull is a kind of Iceland
Gull or an intergrade Iceland x Thayer's I will leave to more
learned laridologists.
