Rare Bird Alert for WESTERN SCRUB-JAY and possible GRASSHOPPER SPARROW

Sightings for Sunday, January 13th

A WESTERN SCRUB-JAY, which has been visiting a feeder in the Mary Hill area
for several weeks, has been confirmed by local birders. It is located in the
Rodger Avenue and McDonald Place area of Port Coquitlam. The owners of the
home where the bird has been feeding do not wish to have visitors in their
yard. Please respect local residents' privacy while looking for the bird. It
can be found moving throughout this neighborhood with STELLER'S JAYS.

North of the Iona Causeway, at Old Shannon Road, a bird fitting the
description of a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen in a field.

The NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES were seen at Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Also here
was
a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, an AMERICAN BITTERN and 6 CEDAR WAXWINGS. The 4 MUTE
SWANS continue at the Westham Island Bridge.

There were 30 Common Redpolls at the south end of the Iona causeway. There
were also 30 Common Redpolls on the corner of Ontario Street and 52nd Avenue
in Vancouver. Nearby, at the Langara Golf Course was a HERMIT THRUSH. 10
more COMMON REDPOLLS were at Burnaby Mountain Park. Also here were 5 RED
CROSSBILLS and 3 PINE GROSBEAKS.

At the foot of 64th, Boundary Bay, was a GYRFALCON, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER
and an AMERICAN PIPIT while at Brunswick Point was a PRAIRIE FALCON. The
AMERICAN KESTREL was at 41B and Deltaport Way. Nearby was a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW. At the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty was a WILLET and a PRAIRIE FALCON,
possibly the same bird also seen at Brunswick Point.

In Deep Cove, on Harris Street were 12 RED CROSSBILLS and 1 HERMIT THRUSH.

A HUTTON'S VIREO was in Queen Elizabeth Park.

The 4 LONG-EARED OWLS were at the Richmond West Dyke.

Sightings for Saturday, January 12th

The NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES again made an appearance at Reifel Bird
Sanctuary. Also at the Sanctuary was a VIRGINIA RAIL.

At the south end of the Iona causeway was a small flock of COMMON REDPOLLS
and 2 BARN SWALLOWS.

There were 4 LONG-EARED OWLS at the Richmond West Dyke.

Sightings for Friday, January 11th

Once again the NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES were at the Reifel Refuge entrance
road. Also discovered at Reifel was an immature SWAMP SPARROW on the East
Dyke. Other birds at Reifel were an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a CINNAMON
TEAL.

The AMERICAN KESTREL was seen at 41B Street and Deltaport Way in Delta. At
33A Avenue and 41st Street was a LINCOLN'S SPARROW and there were 4 MUTE
SWANS at the Westham Island Bridge.

There were 4 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty while at
the
foot of 64th, Boundary Bay, there was the GYRFALCON.

On the Richmond West Dyke were 3 LONG-EARED OWLS and an AMERICAN BITTERN.

In an Alder woodlot along the Iona Causeway at Sea Island were 30 COMMON
REDPOLLS. Also at Iona were 2 BARN SWALLOWS.
