Yesterday afternoon I was honored a visit by the five year old neighbor boy
who has likes to visit and watch the birds at my feeders with me. The gold
finches are just starting to appear and he noticed right away that we had
new birds. I have a very basic bird guide book that I gave to him and we
looked for the picture of what might be this new bird. I told him to read
the description very carefully and look to see if this described the bird we
were watching. He stood and silently read the page and then went to the
window for a closer look, and just stood looking, not saying a word. I
asked him what he thought, was it a goldfinch? Very slowly he says, "I don't
think so, it doesn't have underwear."

Underwear?

I asked him why he was looking for a bird to have underwear. Very slowly he
reads the description,".....and yellow underpants. These birds don't have
underpants!"

Well, oh my, let's read the book together. The child is five years old, and
the word 'underparts' does look a lot like the word 'underpants'. We both
got
a pretty good giggle out of that one, hope you do too!
