Hi Tweets!
We decided to look for a few state birds over the long week-end.
We had 4 targeted birds, had good luck and found 5 and heard a 6th
one.
Left Walla Walla on Friday a.m. and drove down the Columbia
River on the Washington side. We found an Osprey just west of Long
View, not sure if it is an over-winterer or an early returnee. Had a
hard time finding Julia Butler Hansen headquarters, it took 3 local
folk's directions to finally get us there. The new sign that is
supposed to go up will be a big help.
Arrived about 4p.m. and found the Black Phoebe in about 5
minutes, also seen in the area were 2 White-tailed Kites.
We spent the next 2 days birding with Ruth and Patrick
Sullivan(see Patrick's note for the birds we all saw Saturday and
Sunday). State bird #2 was the Bar-tailed Godwit, # 3 was a Willet.
Bird #4, Snowy Plover(for Larry, Jacque missed them!). Sunday we
heard the Mountain Quail, #5.
Monday on our way home we stopped at Woodland to try for the
Clay-colored Sparrow. After an hour of searching we decided we
weren't going to see the bird and got in the car to leave. Just then
the sparrow flew in, landed where we could see it, stayed about 2
minutes and left again. That was #6, not a bad week-end!
