hello fellow Tweeters,
I have suspended my neighbourhood bird surveys for the summer. Since it was
just my own informal survey, I don't feel bad about doing that. I'm still
watching birds whenever I go for walks, just not writing them down. I have
located a Flicker nest in a dead snag. The nest is about 25 feet up. Did not
see any adults, but saw a baby poking its head out the entrance hole. Of
course, this time of year, there really isn't much bird activity. Saw a
Cedar Waxwing in our fir tree about a week ago. And the Black-headed
Grosbeaks are still around. Other than that, just the usual other species:
House Finch, Black-capped Chickadee, etc. I was at the Reifel Migratory Bird
Sanctuary a couple of days ago. I was actually glad I did not come across
the Sandhill Cranes. They like to threaten me! I was surprised by seeing
quite a few Green-winged Teal and Blue-winged Teal. Also a pair of
Long-billed Dowitchers. Was not happy with spotting several Brown-headed
Cowbirds! The poor ducks look like they have been through a hurricane; also
there are feathers everywhere. That's it for now, I need to leave for the
Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, I am volunteering there.
