This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Friday July 5th, morning update
sponsored in part by the Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Vancouver and
North Vancouver.

Featured bird is Out Of Town CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR

Sightings for Thursday, July 4th

RARE BIRD ALERT OUT OF TOWN! A male breeding plumaged
CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR has been present since
July 1st in a pasture field outside of Clearwater BC. To get to this bird
take Highway 5 (the Yellowhead Highway) north of Kamloops to Clearwater.
Just north of the town take a left on
Clearwater Valley Rd (this is also the road that goes to Wells Gray
Provincial Park).
Travel 28 km up the road to Trout Creek Rd. Make a right and go 1 km
till you are in an open area. The bird comes out to the road every 30
minutes
or so and is very reliable to date.

Locally a singing LEAST FLYCATCHER was found south of Vye Rd on
Whatcom Rd 1.4km down in the Abbotsford area.

At Colony Farm up 7 male LAZULI BUNTINGS were found singing on
terrritory.

Wednesday, July 3

No sightings.

Tuesday, July 2

At the first sharp bend along Neaves Road in Pitt Meadows was the
singing male YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

At the Iona Island Sewage Ponds 150 WESTERN SANDPIPERS & 1 LEAST
SANDPIPER were reported.

Monday, July 1

At Ambleside Park Lagoon in West Vancouver a family of 4 GREEN HERONS
were observed including 2 adults and 2 juveniles.

At Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver was a GREEN HERON.

Sunday, June 30

A VESPER SPARROW was found in the mid afternoon in the parking lot
at Grant Narrows Regional Park in Pitt Meadows. Along the Grant
Narrows Nature Dyke Trail about 500m along the dyke was a singing male
AMERICAN REDSTART.

Nearby at the first bend of Neaves Rd were a pair of YELLOW-BREASTED
CHATS. Nesting is strongly suspected and would be a first for the
Vancouver
Checklist Area.

At Colony Farms along Colony Farm Rd directly behind the old
abandoned buildings were upto 2 singing male LAZULI BUNTINGS.

In South Surrey 2 juvenile MERLINS were reported at the intersection
of 28th Ave & 141 St.

Saturday, June 29

At Blackie Spit a MARBLED GODWIT and 8 WHIMBREL were reported.
Nearby at the end of the White Rock Pier 14 HARLEQUIN DUCKS were
noted.

At the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetties Compensation Lagoon were 7 WHIMBREL,
60+ CASPIAN TERNS and 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were all reported.

On the foreshore of Boundary Bay Regional Park off the foot of 104th
Street over 2000 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were noted commencing the first wave of
southbound shorebird migrants!
