As I was driving the Mountain Loop Hiway, south of Darrington, today, I
noticed what looked like a bird sitting in the middle of the right lane
of this paved road. I kept thinking that I must be mistaken and that no

bird would just sit on the roadway. As I passed over it, I realized
that it really was a bird. I stopped and backed up close to it, then
got out expecting to find an injured bird. But just as I got to it,
this young Three-toed Woodpecker picked up and flew off into the trees.
It flew with ease and no apparent injury. I hope it selects a better
place to rest after this. I would hate to see it be added to our
flattened fauna.
