Dear Tweeters;
I'm two-plus days into my crash course in Washington State birding,
and having a blast! I've had a few misses, but that's to be expected- just
means I'll have to come back. Had a wonderful pelagic trip out of Westport-
finally got that pesky Leach's Storm-Petrel. I was lucky to get Northern
Goshawk within a few hours of getting off the plane, at Quinault. Today
provided 3 of 5 woodpeckers- Black-backed and White-headed at the Nile Rd.
burn (thank you to Rachel Lawson, and the nice folks I met at the burn), and
Lewis's at Ft. Simcoe (sorry, no Vermillion Flycatchers). Anybody have a
reliable site for Red-breasted Sapsuckers on the Olympic Peninsula?- this
shouldn't be the hardest woodpecker, should it?
Besides the lifers, I've enjoyed re-visiting a few species I've only
seen once or twice before- Western Tanager, Gray Jay, Mountain Chickadee,
Ash-throated Flycatcher, Hermit Warbler, Black-headed Grosbeak, and a trio of
Golden Eagles circling me at Sand Lake Trail, near White Pass. And a Prairie
Falcon near Ft. Simcoe surprised me- are they expected there?
One more question- does anyone have (and would be willing to share)
directions to the Biscuit Ridge GGO's, or details on the WOS conference
owling trips? I've figured out rough directions from DeLorme, but it's still
a little vague, of course. I'll be taking a stab at owling the next few
nights, so any help would be much appreciated.
In response to Ian Paulsen's e-mail I just received, this heat wave is
a walk in the park compared to the NYC subway in rush hour, in July!
Thanks for all who have given advice and kind words thus far- your aid
has gotten me off to a wonderful start!
Happy birding,
Ken Allaire
