Kevin Aanerud discovered an adult (probably female) Curlew Sandpiper at
Crockett Lake, Friday the 19th at 12:15 pm. I refound the bird at 5:30 pm
the same day. The bird is found from Wanamaker Road, DeLorme Atlas, page 94,
C-3.To get there, using the Keystone Ferry landing as a reference point, go
east on US 20, take the 90 degree left at the end of the lake, then left on
Wanamaker. Park well off the road before you come to two right pointing
arrows. Your mission is now to hike to the mud. There is not really a path,
save the ones Kevin and I made. You may have to blaze your own. At any rate,
you may need rubber boots by the time you get to the mud. I didn't have
mine, and nearly lost both my sneakers.
The target bird was associating with Short-billed Dowitchers, which, if you
are not paying attention, can hide it. A scope is definitely helpful.
