This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Tuesday July 23rd, morning
update sponsored in part by the Wild Birds Unlimited Stores in Vancouver
and North Vancouver.

The feature bird is RED KNOT

Sightings for Monday, July 22

At the foot of 112th Street were 200 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS with 2 RED
KNOTS.

Sunday, July 21

On the road up Mt Seymour this morning a bird believed to be a female
SPRUCE GROUSE was observed sitting on the side of the road. Confirmation is
requested as this would be a new species for the Vancouver Checklist Area.
Seen on top of 1st
Pump Peak was 1 TURKEY VULTURE.

At Colony Farm along Colony Farm Road behind the abandoned buildings
were a pair of LAZULI BUNTINGS.

At the foot of 112th Street the following shorebirds were seen: 12
WHIMBREL,
80 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 75 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS 2 RED KNOTS,
100'S of peeps including WESTERNS, LEASTS, a few SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS along with 3 BAIRD'S and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
Also patrolling the foreshore was an adult PEREGRINE FALCON.

At the Iona Island Sewage Ponds today the following shorebirds were
reported:
2 juvenile LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 3500
WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 28 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS including 7 juveniles,
200 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 15 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Also here was an adult PEREGRINE FALCON.

At the Roberts Bank Coal Port Jetty were 6 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and
an immature PEREGRINE FALCON.

At the Compensation Lagoon out the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty were 3
WHIMBREL.

Saturday, July 20

On Second Pump Peak near the top of Mt Seymour a GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-
FINCH was discovered today.

Fall shorebirding got better and better today on the afternoon hightide.

At the foot of 104th Street just east along the dyke a full breeding
plumaged RUDDY TURNSTONE was found amongst a small flock of BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS. Also here were good numbers of WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 1 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER.

At Iona Island Sewage Ponds the afternoon hightide brought very high
numbers of peeps. There were 7-8000 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 50 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS including 5 juvenile birds, 500 LEAST SANDPIPERS including 2
juveniles, 40 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER and 7 KILLDEER.

At the Compensation Lagoon near the tip of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty
were 3 WHIMBREL and 6 Dowitchers.

Along the Roberts Bank Coal Port Jetty 1500 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 30
LEAST SANDPIPERS, 4 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER were
all reported.

Nearby at Beach Grove Lagoon 150 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 20 LEAST
SANDPIPERS and 2 DOWITCHERS were reported.

In Vancouver at Musqueum Park the BARRED OWL pair continues to be
seen near the new drainage pond along the concrete path in the park.

BLACK SWIFTS have been widely reported from all over the Lower
Mainland the past few days.
