How about Cascade-Olympic Natural History by Daniel Matthews?

Not much use for birding, with only a few photos and many species omitted,
but it is fun reading, with scattered, kinda chatty essays such as bios of
early naturalists and the interaction of tree roots and fungi. Bonus
points for the first edition supposedly being written in a cabin off the
grid with a manual typewriter.

I don't know if it has more or less than the usual number of errors, but
it seems like a nice survey.
