Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Saturday June 3 (2002). This hotline,

A CLARK'S GREBE was at Medicine Lake in Kootenai Co. on 2 June according to
Jane Westervelt. Take the Rainy Hill Rd off of ID 3, the grebe was on the
south side of this road just before the T intersection. ID DeLorme 60, C-2.

Jane also report a female PURPLE FINCH at a feeder along Goosehaven Rd, just
west of St Maries. There were a number of feeders present here. Please
respect the privacy of the home owner when viewing feeders. ID DeLorme 60,
C-2.

At Swallows Park in Clarkston, Al Winters reports 14 FRANKLIN'S GULLS and a
CASPIAN TERN on 2 June. This has been a good spot for loafing gulls and
terns in recent weeks. Swallow's Park is along the Snake River south of
Clarkston along WA 129. WA DeLorme 43, A-8.

Al also located a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE in northeastern Oregon along Forest
Service Rd. 4680 on Cold Spring Creek. Look at mile 13.7 which is about .3
miles south of milepost 14. This is about 40 miles south of Asotin, WA and 4
miles across the OR/WA border.

A BREWER'S SPARROW was reported by Kelly Cassidy south of Pullman.

A cooperative BAND-TAILED PIGEON spent the day on June 1 at Tom Besser's
place on the west side of Moscow Mountain.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS have returned to the Centenial Trail near Spokane and
were reported by Gina Sheridan on 31 May. The location is reached by heading
out to east on I-90 and taking the Liberty Lake/Otis Orchard exit. Turn left
(north) and drive up Harvard Road about a mile. When you reach the river,
turn left into the parking lot for the trail head. Walk westward for about a
mile until you reach mile post 5. At this point, we could hear the bird
singing in the shrubby trees to the left (west). It tends to hang low and
can be quiet for extended periods. However, we did obtain good views of the

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was reported in Spokane and seen by Gina on 31 May.
It was observed in the area of Browns Addition along Riverside just north
of Coeur D'Alene Park. Matthew Moskwik saw it later in the day along Clark
St.

A CATTLE EGRET was on the University of Idaho campus on 28 May at Guy Wick's
Field for a rare spring record. It was reported by Jane Westervelt.

The COMMON GRACKLE reported about 8 weeks ago near Yakima, Yakima Co WA by
Denny Granstrand is still present. To get to the spot from I-82 east of
Yakima, take the Nob Hill Blvd/Highway 24 exit off I-82. Go east about 2
miles, passing the K-Mart on the right with a traffic light at the highway.
The next traffic light will be Birchfield Road. Turn right at the light onto
Birchfield Road. Go .9 miles south. The road takes a curve to the right. The
grackle usually hangs out at the house on the right side of the road just
after the curve. It is frequently seen in the trees and bushes in front of
the house or in the corrals just south of the house. If not seen there, it
might be found on either side of the road for about 200 yards to the south.
Listen for its odd "song" that is a combination between high-pitched squeek
and whistle. WA DeLorme 51, D-5.
