We've finally gotten moved into our home on Offutt Lake and the birding
this first week has been wonderful! So far, we've spotted 26 different
birds (plus one possible). The list thus far:
Great Blue Heron
Bald Eagle
Violet-Green Swallow
Barn Swallow
Fox Sparrow
Spotted Towhee (who still looks "Rufous" to me...:) )
Rufous Hummingbird
Cedar Waxwing
American Goldfinch
Crow (haven't yet determined if American or Northwestern or both)
Raven
American Robin
Osprey
Mallard
Canada Goose
Belted Kingfisher
House Sparrow
Red-Winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Black-headed Grosbeak
Stellar's Jay
European Starling (c'mon Eagles and Ospreys--eat those rascals!!)
Killdeer
Rock Dove (only one and only once, fortunately)
Common Merganser
Song Sparrow

And the possible is a Le Conte's Sparrow. Any of you Black Hills folks
know if they hang around these parts? The bird I saw matched the
Peterson's and Stokes, but I could be mistaken. Sorry about the length,
but can you tell I'm excited??!?? And now that the goldfinches broke
the ice on the seed feeder, the Black-Headed Grosbeaks are making
regular stops there.
