MaryAnne Thorbeck, Phyllis Stark and I had a wonderful two day birding trip to Eastern Washington last Friday and Saturday. There were many great birds, but the highlight was observing a Common Raven nest with four nestlings. It was on the old Vantage Highway just past mile post 22. It is the rocky area that years ago had Great Horned Owl nesting there. We were alerted to the nest by the loud squawking of the nestlings. The parent bird was feeding the babies frequently. The outstanding feature of the nestlings was there huge beaks. The nest is far enough away from the road that our presence didn't seem to make any difference to the activity. Also at that spot we observed a Yellow-breasted Chat singing and displaying from a utility wire a pair of Rock Wrens and a Lazuli Bunting.
