Subject: Great Day in Pend Oreille County

Inlanders and Tweeters,

Black Swift - Two birds flying high above the Tacoma Creek Bridge just before a thunderstorm.

Least Flycatchers - Several birds calling from an aspen thicket about 1 mile north of the Tacoma Creek Bridge. The thicket is about 100 yards from the highway, so the seeing the birds is virtually impossible.

Clay-colored Sparrow - The same bird reported last week is still singing on territory.

Black-necked Stilt - There are still 12 pairs present. One female was sitting on a nest.

Red-necked Phalarope - One female associating with a flock of Wilson's Phalarope on the reservation (may be a county first).

Mountain Quail - I heard one bird at the same location as the Least Flycatchers. The bird was probably 100 yards or more off of the west side of the highway. There is a brushy slope on this side of the highway. Could this be an escapee or could it suggest that there is a small population in the area. The reason why I'm suggesting this is because I spoke with a Spokane birder a couple of weeks ago, who mentioned to me that they had seen Mountain Quail in the past (several years ago) on logging roads in the county. The gentleman who told me assured me that they were Mountain Quail. I guess more investigation is needed, but today's sighting is intriguing. If a population of Mountain Quail is found in the county, then this would be the only species of quail present here, as there are no documented sightings of California Quail in the county (I've been keeping an eye out for them too).
