directions, your fellow birdwatchers will appreciate it.

An ALDER FLYCATCHER was first seen 8 June near Crab Creek, Lincoln Co WA by
Bob Flores. Here are his directions to the bird: From the main road in
Ritzville take Division Street toward the Cemetery. Marcellus veers right
off Division heading north. After several miles at the county line there is
a "Y" in the road, take the right arm (Rocky Ford Road). Stay on Rocky Ford
to the main stem of Crab Creek. Bird the north side. The ALDER is in the
first large patch, when you get to the riparian fence along the thicket
listen for the bird. The ALDER likes to sit up on the top of two trees in
the thicket. It also forges low around the thicket and this is when it would
work its way past us at close distance. WA DeLorme 71, B-5. As near as I can
tell, this is very close to the same place where a PHILADELPHIA VIREO was
seen by Dan Barton on 7 June. His directions: From the bridge where
Marcellus Road goes over-and that area is also called Rocky Ford Road-where
that road crosses Crab Creek, go 500 meters east on the north side of the
road. The bird was singing from willows and hawthorns in that area, and it's
a nice one.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE is near Kittitas, Kittitas Co WA. Dave Beaudette reports
seeing it yesterday (10 June) after a long wait. Two days in a row it has
been present from 1530 until 1600. From I-90, take the Kittitas exit and go
north through Kittitas. You come to a "T" at the north end of the main
street in Kittitas; turn right and then left on No. 81 Road (just follow the
arterial). Go about 4 miles to Brick Mill Road; turn right. The house is
about 0.2 mile east of No. 81 Road. It is on the south side of the road -a
cream colored house with a green roof. There is a large frame over the gate
with a weathered set of elk antlers on it. The gate will be locked on
Sunday. The feeders are visible from the road. Don't try to enter the yard.
The bird tends to hang out in the feeder that's in the back yard. The back
yard is easily visible. From Brick Mill Road, just after the house, make a
right turn; you can park off the road pretty easily and look at the feeder
in the back of the house. WA DeLorme 51, 5-A.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS have returned to the Centenial Trail near Spokane,
Spokane Co WA, and were reported by Gina Sheridan on 31 May. The location is
reached by heading out to east on I-90 and taking the Liberty Lake/Otis
Orchard exit. Turn left (north) and drive up Harvard Road about a mile. When
you reach the river, turn left into the parking lot for the trail head. Walk
westward for about a mile until you reach mile post 5. At this point, we
could hear the bird singing in the shrubby trees to the left (west). WA
DeLorme 89, C-8.

The COMMON GRACKLE reported about 8 weeks ago near Yakima, Yakima Co WA by
Denny Granstrand is still present. To get to the spot from I-82 east of
Yakima, take the Nob Hill Blvd/Highway 24 exit off I-82. Go east about 2
miles, passing the K-Mart on the right with a traffic light at the highway.
The next traffic light will be Birchfield Road. Turn right at the light onto
Birchfield Road. Go .9 miles south. The road takes a curve to the right. The
grackle usually hangs out at the house on the right side of the road just
after the curve. It is frequently seen in the trees and bushes in front of
the house or in the corrals just south of the house. If not seen there, it
might be found on either side of the road for about 200 yards to the south.
Listen for its odd "song" that is a combination between high-pitched squeek
and whistle. WA DeLorme 51, D-5.

Matthew Moskwik saw some good birds in Pend Oreille Co WA on 10 June. Two
BLACK SWIFTS were flying high above the Tacoma Creek Bridge. Several LEAST
FLYCATCHERS were calling from an aspen thicket about 1 mile north of the
Tacoma Creek Bridge. The thicket is about 100 yards from the highway, so
seeing the birds is virtually impossible. At this same location, Matthew
reports hearing a MOUNTAIN QUAIL, a sighting that merits additional
attention. WA DeLorme 105, AB-6.

Unusual for Latah Co ID was a single WHITE PELICAN on Spring Valley
Reservoir east of Troy on 5 June, reported by Charles Swift. Also unusual
were the 2 CALIFORNIA GULLS in attendance. None of these birds persisted.
However, even more interesting is the report of 2 juvy GREAT GRAY OWLS on
dam end of the lake on 7 June by Terry and Christine Gray. The road to the
reservoir is about 2 miles east of Troy along ID 8. ID DeLorme 58, BC-1.5.

A late PACIFIC LOON was seen 9 June in Kittitas Co WA on the Columbia River
south of Wanapum Dam by Patrick and Ruth Sullivan. The dam is about 5 miles
south of Vantage. WA DeLorme 52, AB-1.

If you have any questions about birds on the report, call me before 9 pm at
208.883.0943. If you see any of the birds mentioned in this report, be sure
to let me know.

Good birding.
