Subject: Crows Pillage GBH Rookery

After a call from a local birder on Vashon, I talked to some residents of the
Burton area of Vashon. Apparently three to four GBH nests were built there
this spring and they have enjoyed watching them build the nests. Recently, one
nest appeared abandoned and subsequently a loud noise from crows was heard.
They said it was ominous enough sounding that they grabbed a broom when going
out to see. As they approached the area, some crows retreated but others kept
up the raucous calling. Then an adult GBH fell injured and dying from the
trees to be followed by a rain of chicks and one dead crow. It didn't appear as
if the crows were even interested in eating the dead GBH. Seems like a weird
occurrence to have them attack a non-threatening bird of that size where they
have a good chance of injury.
