We spent the weekend with friends in Plain, WA, some 15 miles north of
Leavenworth, who have made their 20 acres attractive to large numbers of
birds. Their landscaping includes grassland, woods, and a 20 X 100 ft
pond. We also birded outside Leavenworth at the posh Sleeping Lady
resort, the fish hatchery wetland, and at Blackbird Island in the
Wenatchee River, which is part of a very birdy city park. Our better
finds included a White-headed Woodpecker, a Veery, and a Gray Catbird.
Altogether we found 59 species, including several Teanaway raptors, some
Bald Eagles over I-90 in Mercer Island, and a Peregrine Falcon on a
tower next to the West Seattle Bridge.
