In my experience in B.C., N. Rough-wings will use whatever is around. Favourite around Prince George here are the ends of old blasting drill holes on highway rock outcrops. However, I have never seen a NRWS nesting in a man-made cavity other than these drill holes.

Violet-greens on the other hand seem to prefer anything man-made over anything natural if they can get it.
