Hi-

I heard a ton of alders in BC last spring and summer. The mnemonic that
came to mind for me was 'ree-BEER-a' or 'free-BEER-a'. I guess different
people translate bird songs into English-like sounds differently.

Tweets,

Scott Atkinson said..."How in the world the standard rendition of Alder's
song became "fee-bee-o" is a mystery to me."

Alders that I have heard in New England, Maine specifically, sing
"fee-BEE-o" The last syllable is audible, but weaker than the first. I think
it was probably R.T. Peterson who first described the songs of the Traill's
flycatchers as "fitz-bew" for willow and "fee-BEE-o" for alder. He must
have been describing birds in the east. I'm not familiar with alders in the
west. Perhaps western birds don't enunciate that last syllable that you
hear with birds in New England.
