On Sunday, June 30, my wife and I birded the Trout Lake area in
Klickitat County. Along the nature trail at the Elk Meadows R.V. Park we
found a female AMERICAN REDSTART and one GRAY CATBIRD. We then searched
the Northeast side of the marsh in the area where Bob Hansen and Stuart
Johnston had reported an Ovenbird earlier this month. The only birds of
interest we could find in the wind were RED-EYED VIREOS along the creek
and a WESTERN SCRUB-JAY. This is the highest elevation that I have ever
encountered a Scrub-Jay, Steller's and Gray Jays would be more expected
here. We then drove up to Maryhill and picked a box of Rainier Cherries
and a couple of boxes of apricots. LESSER GOLDFINCHES were calling both
in the orchard and around the fruit stands in town.
