This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Sunday June 30th, evening update
sponsored in part by the Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Vancouver and
North Vancouver.

Featured birds are VESPER SPARROW, AMERICAN REDSTART
& YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT

Sightings for Sunday, June 30

A VESPER SPARROW was found in the mid afternoon in the parking lot
at Grant Narrows Regional Park in Pitt Meadows. Along the Nature Dyke
Trail about 500m along the dike was a singing male AMERICAN REDSTART.
At the first bend of Neaves Rd in Pitt Meadows were a pair of
YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS. Nesting is strongly suspected and would be a first
for the Vancouver Checklist Area.

At Colony Farm along Colony Farm Rd directly behind the old abandoned
buildings
were up to 2 singing male LAZULI BUNTINGS.

Sightings for Saturday, June 29

In an extremely out of season sighting a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was
carefully studied at Annacis Island Sewage Treatment Plant.

At Blackie Spit a MARBLED GODWIT and 8 WHIMBREL were reported.
Nearby at the end of the White Rock Pier 14 HARLEQUIN DUCKS were
noted.

At the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetties Compensation Lagoon 7 WHIMBREL, 60+
CASPIAN TERNS and 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were all reported.

Sightings for Friday, June 28

Reported today but seen on Tuesday evening by a visiting British
birder with experience birding in southern Ontario observed a
YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO at the Vaseux Lake Nature Reserve which is south of Okanagan Falls in
the Okanagan. For updates on this bird please call the Okanagan Bird Alert

In Victoria BLACK THROATED BLUE WARBLER was seen briefly at the
corner of Blanchard and Finlayson in Victoria. For updates on this bird

A male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen near the intersection of the
Mary Hill Bypass and United Blvd.

At Colony Farm RP there were 3 male LAZULI BUNTING seen near the
boarded up buildings on Colony Farm Rd.

The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen and heard at the Neaves Rd. bend.
Also here were 2 GRAY CATBIRDS and a GREEN HERON.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was reported near the intersection of Hwy #17 and
52nd St. in Tsawwassen.

Thursday, June 27

On the weekly Bunting survey at Colony Farm RP, 9 male LAZULI
BUNTINGS were recorded. All birds appear to be habituating blackberry
brambles.
Three were near the old pig barns in the far SW portion of the park. Five
were seen along Colony Farm Rd. some near the boarded up buildings west of
the community gardens. A single bird was seen along the trail at the
south end of the park on the Port Coquitlam side running from the dike to
Shaughnessey St. Also in this area were 2 BULLOCK'S ORIOLES.

Seen in over flight near Burnaby's Lougheed Mall were 10 AMERICAN
PIPITS.

In a late report 7 WHIMBREL and a MARBLED GODWIT were observed at
Blackie Spit.

June 25 & 26

No reports

Monday, June 24

Three BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, 2 adults and a juvenile, were seen at the
compensation lagoon on the Tsawwassen Jetty. Also here were 3
WHIMBREL.

Sunday, June 23

The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was reported from its now usual location at
the bend on Neaves Rd. Also here were 2 GRAY CATBIRDS.

A WHIMBREL was seen at the compensation lagoon on the Tsawwassen
Jetty.
