Janet and I made a nice frosty morning visit to Spencer Island today,
March 1st. Around on the NE part of the loop trail at about 10 a.m. we
encountered about 30 COMMON REDPOLLs working the trees, slowly moving
northward. We spent about 15 minutes with them but couldn't uncover a
Hoary. Still it was nice to see they are still around here on the west
side of the mountains.

Also seen and heard were BEWICK'S and MARSH WRENS, RUBY and GOLD-CROWNED
KINGLETS, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, BUSHTITS, NORTHERN FLICKERS, DOWNY, and
a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS, many SONG SPARROWS, a LINCOLN'S, and a
flock of GOLD-CROWNED SPARROWS, several SPOTTED TOWHEES, a COOPER'S and a
RED-TAILED HAWK. We thought we saw an Osprey but it turned into an
immature BALD EAGLE as we got closer. Ducks included RING-NECKED,
PINTAILS, MALLARDS, GREEN-WINGED TEALS, and a COMMON MERGANSER.

All in all quite a nice morning at Spencer Island.
