Hello birders,

Yesterday (March 3rd) I went birding in the S. Okanagan with a number of
other birders. The weather was nice, although the wind kept a few species
down. Here are some of our highlites:

Two immature HARLEQUIN DUCKS were again on the Okanagan River at the
Okanagan Falls Campground.

Shuttleworth Ck Road (Ok Falls)

SPRUCE GROUSE - 1 male feeding on the road at km 20!
White-winged Crossbill - 1 at km 23
Boreal Chickadee - 1 at km 23
Three-toed Woodpecker - 1 male at km 23
Pine Grosbeak - 10
Gray Jay - 5

3 THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS were in the old growth subalpine forest along
Dutton Ck Road, off Shuttleworth. Many other woodpeckers were tapping and
drumming in the area but couldn't be located.

Road 22 (Osoyoos)

TREE SWALLOW 2 males - first of the year in the valley.
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW - 4
SAY'S PHOEBE - 1 around the old abandond buildins.
Northern Harrier - 1

Richter Pass (W. of Osoyoos)

CHUKAR - 10 at the Elkink Ranch, where they were feeding on a sagebrush
covered hillside with California Quail.
NORTHERN SHRIKE - 2 ad.
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD - 1 male - first of the season in the valley.
Western Meadowlark - 4

Today - March 4th

BARN SWALLOW - 1 was along Mission Ck, in Kelowna, upstream from Gordon
Road. This is the earliest valley record, and it is about 6-7 weeks earlier
than the average arrival date.
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW - 2 at Mission Ck and Gordon Road.
