I've had Violet Green Swallows nesting in a box every year for the
last 7 years. Never had I seen a House Sparrow on my property until the 4th
year, when I witnessed a House Sparrow systematically yanking one hatchling
after another out of the box and pecking it to death on the ground. When I
finally stopped the carnage, there were only two babies left. I've never
seen another House Sparrow here since and it's a good thing because I know I
would be getting out the heavy artillery.
