Cascadia Hummingbird Report - 4/01/2002

Reports east of the Cascade Range came in this week.
Two were along the Columbia River at White Salmon, WA and
Bingen, WA. which are late by about 2 weeks, as was a report
from Zigzag, OR in the Cascades below Mt Hood. A heard
only bird at Sisters, OR is about 3 weeks early. A female
Rufous was seen working on a nest in Corvallis, OR.

In flower news, the Salmonberry (_Rubus spectabilis_) at the
Warrenton, OR monitoring site is in full bloom. 10-12 Rufous
Hummingbirds were counted in a 100m stetch of the patch. Bloom
peak for Salmonberry is still at least a week off at the Astoria
monitoring site. The lone Red-flowering Currant (_Ribes
sanguineum_) is in full bloom at the Astoria site, but doesn't
seem to have attracted much attention from any hummingbirds.
Black Twinberry (_Lonicera involucrata_) began blooming at
the Neawanna banding station in Seaside, OR. Rufous Hummingbirds
were reported nectaring on Kinickinick (_Arctostaphylos
uva-ursi_) in the coast range above Fall City, OR.
