I think Kelly's referral to "mud habitat" as an early successional wetland
is a key part of this discussion. Open mud doesn't stay open for very long,
succession leads to gradual filling and eventual plant invasion. Freshwater
mud that's left alone will often very likely turn into blackberry and
scotsbroom thickets.
