Hi folks,
Phyllis Stark and I started off a good day of birding in central Washington with a close look at an adult Black Bear. We were standing by the car, listening to a Cassin's Vireo, Spotted Towhee, Nashville Warbler and the drumming of a Williamson's Sapsucker, when Phyllis pointed out a very large four-footed mammal walking at a brisk pace down the road towards us. As it halved the distance between us Phyllis ventured an opinion related to us jumping back into the car, but before we could make our move it took a sharp right into the woods about 40 yards from us. We listened for a minute, but heard nothing. So we decided to look for birds in the direction away from where the bear had disappeared. That is a wonderful spot for birding in May and I urge you to visit it before the heavy equipment changes it forever. Trendwest has plans to turn this area into a destination resort with condos, golf courses, restaurants and swimming pools. It could happen at any time; they have approval from Kittitas County to do so.
