While everyone else was heading to Grays Harbor this weekend, Natalie and
I ventured north from Tacoma to the Skagit Flats area. There were plenty
of songbirds to be seen, and a few hundred shorebirds - Western
Sandpipers, Dunlin, and a couple of Least Sandpipers - in Fidalgo Bay
during the low tide. But what struck us the most was the sight of 150-
plus Great Blue Heron feeding in the shallows of Padilla Bay around 6
p.m. Saturday evening, just offshore from Bay View State Park. We were
impressed with the heron numbers as we drove around Fir Island and also
later in Fidalgo Bay as seen from March's Point, but this is the first
time either of us have seen this kind of gathering of GBH's.

I did get a decent digital photo of a mature Bald Eagle sitting on a rock
along the tide line at the tip of March's Point. If anyone is interested,
the shot along with a smaller picture of 100 or so herons feeding can be
seen on my nature Weblog, The Equinox Project at http://
