While practicing the Rochester Warriors baseball team in preparation for
the upcoming district tournament a flock of large shorebirds flew over the
field several times. I immediately sent a student into the building to get
my colleague, Jan Watson, to check out these birds who went down just beyond
the centerfield fence landing in a farmers sileage field. The time was
3:30pm. At 6:05pm I was finally able to investigate these birds, who were
still present, and found a flock of approximately 70 Whimbrels very patiently
feeding. Jan and I watched the Whimbrels for about 15 minutes and left them
still foraging in the field.
