Someone asked about odd robin nesting locations a day or two ago. Today, I was at Prairie Bloom nursery in Pullman, spending too much money on ornamental plants, when one of the nursery workers pointed out a robin nest. The nest was a pile of sticks on a circular metal plant stand about 5 feet above the ground in the middle of the display area. It had at least 2 bright blue eggs. I just took a quick peek because the parents were perched on the nearby fence. The nursery person said the Robins don't get too upset about people unless someone approaches too suddenly. Hard to imagine the robins will be able to keep the eggs warm enough when the nursery traffic picks up.

A friend of mine in Seattle always had a pair of robins nesting about 6 feet up in a shrub by her back door. The crows always got very interested in the nest area about the time the chicks hatched, so Bonnie (the friend) encouraged her standard poodle to chase off any crows that came in the yard. The poodle didn't need any encouragement to chase off the cats. It seemed to work, since the robins were usually successful in raising at least one brood a year.
