HI BIRDBAND,

I received the following email from Stephen Earsom, a biologist in Puerto
Rico. They need banders for a project in Puerto Rico, and their application
deadline is May 17. I'm not involved, except that I know Steve and he asked
me to forward this to BIRDBAND. Read on for more details...
Thanks!

Field Coordinators Needed for Bird Banding Project in Puerto Rico

The Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex is seeking 2 persons
to carry out a mistnetting project in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
Experience in mistnetting, banding and measuring passerine birds is
required.

Ability to work without supervision, maintain organization of equipment,
arrange logistics, and train/supervise volunteers (with a big grin on your
face!) is essential. Experience with the Band Manager computer program,
ability to speak both English and Spanish, and experience in banding
hummingbirds will set you apart from the crowd.

Work will consist of approximately four (4) weeks of mistnetting and 2 weeks
of project start-up, report writing and data entry. Fieldwork will include
long hours, hiking in mountainous terrain, hot and humid weather (95 degrees
and 95% humidity), lots of friendly mosquitos and "noseeums," but not a
single poisonous snake! Mistnetting may be carried out in several habitats,
including coastal mangrove, subtropical dry forest, karst and rain forest.
Housing will be provided at the refuge, but some mistnetting locations may
necessitate camping, which means getting rained on. Work will also require
transport in government boats and/or aircraft.

Each coordinator will receive $1,250 for the 6-week project, which will
begin on/around June 24, 2002. Transportation to/from Puerto Rico is not
provided.

To apply, email your CV including phone numbers for yourself and 3
references by Friday, May 17, 2002, to stephen_earsom at fws.gov. Please do
not call or send applications through regular mail. Hiring decisions will
be made as soon as possible after the application deadline.
