Yesterday, about 5PM Andrew Longtin and I found a singing male Black and White Warbler.
I heard him about 3/4 down the road leading to the buildings; really bizarre buzzy warbler. We were able to get him about 4-5 ft. above us in good light, after about 10 minutes of listening, and pishing. His feet were black, white belly, and at first when I saw the black throat and black streakings on his sides, I thought I was seeing things. He continued to sing his odd buzzy song, and jumped down on another branch and turned his head sideways; and we could very easily see his black on the cheek, and white markings on either side of the black. His bill was thin, black, and he had white bars on his wing. The light was good, and he was in a decidious tree, and the leaves were not full size. We watched and listened for about 10 minutes in amazement, to me at least. Andrew sees them all the time in Minnesota, so he wasn't the least impressed. There were other birds on this trip, and tomorrow we head over the mountains, either Andrew or I will write up a full disclosure next week. To get permission to get into the area, which is not marked, drive into Taholah go left before the bridge, and down to the end is a small police station. They close at 5PM. This is on Highway 109, and clearly detailed by Bob Morse in his new, and wonderful book. Anyone who goes out, please read up on the behavior of this bird, as he feeds like a nuthatch, altho we did not see him feeding. He is very responsive to pishing.
