Subject: [inland-NW-birders] Hudsonian Godwit, WOS Field Trip, Whitman
County

I spent a wonderful day leading the Washington Ornithological Society's
field trip in Whitman County today. I was joined by Ken and Laurie Knittle,
Mike and Merry Lynn Denny, Gina Sheridan, and Clare and Sharon Wiser. We
logged 113 species for the day, pretty good for one day in our county.
As indicated in a previous message from Bob Flores, the biggest
highlight of the day was a beautiful, breeding-plumaged HUDSONIAN GODWIT at
Texas Lake (Delorme Page 72, D2). The bird was seen for a long time at about
50 yards. A number of photos were taken by the Denny's. If you would like to
look for this bird, and you would like some directions, feel free to e-mail
me or call me at 509-334-2651. It is necessary to take some back roads to
get to Texas Lake.
Other highlights for the day included the following (in taxonomic order,
more or less, a complete listing of species is below):

Eared Grebe - 11 at Sheep Lake, 7 at Texas Lake
Black-Necked Stilt - 1 at Crooked Knee Lake
American Avocet - ~20 total at various places
Solitary Sandpiper - 5 in a wet meadow southwest of Rock Lake (some of the
road names escape me right now, I don't have a Delorme next to
me).
Long-Billed Curlew - 1 on Lacrosse Airport Road south of Lacrosse
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 1 at Texas Lake
Long-Billed Dowitcher - 11 at Texas Lake
Wilson's Phalarope - ~10 at various places
Red-Necked Phalarope - 1 at Steptoe Sewage Lagoon, 2 at Sheep Lake
Burrowing Owl - An amazing 7 pairs seen from one spot on Lacrosse Airport
Road (The Memorial Track)
Gray Flycatcher - 1 at Kamiak Butte
Loggerhead Shrike - 1 in agricultural area just north of Kamiak Butte
Steller's Jay - 1 at Kamiak Butte (The first record I know of for the county
since I have been here, about two years.)
Townsend's Solitaire - 1 at Steptoe Butte
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1 at Rose Creek Nature Preserve
Grasshopper Sparrow - 2 calling south of Texas Lake
Fox Sparrow - 2 at Steptoe Butte
Cassin's Finch - 6 at Kamiak Butte, hard to find in the county.
