HI ALL:
I just picked up a copy of the abridged edition of the 1st edition of the
AOU Checklist (original 1st: 1883, abridged 1889). I know people complain
about AOU Checklist name changes but after looking through the old
cheklist I realized that most of the English names haven't changed much in
the 100 plus years of the AOU Checklist ( this can't be said for the
scientific names however!). Some of the English names to some species and
subspecies birders today would have trouble with: Baird's Woodpecker,
Lawrence's Flycatcher, Bryant's Marsh Sparrow, etc.. But I think a birder
today wouldn't have much trouble with the old English names for North
American species. Just remember that the next time the AOU Checklist
committee come up with some awkward (or is it Aukward?)English bird name!
