This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Friday May 17th update, sponsored in part by the Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Featured bird is CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD.


Sightings for Friday, May 17

A female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was seen at Grant Narrows near the observation tower on the Nature Dike.

WILSON'S PHALAROPES were reported from the wetland area at Colony Farm and the SE pond at Iona. Also reported from Iona were 3 REDHEADS.

A MARBLED GODWIT was observed at Crescent Beach.

A BARRED OWL was seen in Pacific Spirit Park at the south end of the Clifton Trail.

Thursday, May 16

Three PINE GROSBEAKS were seen at a feeder near UBC's Buchanan Building.


Wednesday, May 16th

At Burnaby Mountain Park was a CHIPPING SPARROW. Also seen was a female
CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD.

A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen at the Iona Ponds. Seen at Blackie's Spit was
a PURPLE MARTIN inspecting a nest box.

At Lily Point, Point Roberts was a WESTERN KINGBIRD.

Sightings for Tuesday, May 15th

>From the Iona south jetty was a first year LITTLE GULL. Also seen from the jetty were a POMARINE JAEGER, 4 REDHEADS and a LONG-BILLED CURLEW. At the ponds were 2 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 10 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS.

Spring migration is well underway with sightings from various locations in
the lower mainland of WESTERN TANAGERS, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, WARBLING VIREOS and the usual warbler species.

Of note from Cecil Green, UBC were a NASHVILLE WARBLER and 10 PARASITIC
JAEGERS.

At Montrose Park in Burnaby was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. At Grant Narrows
Regional Park in Pitt Meadows was a WESTERN KINGBIRD and a LAZULI BUNTING.
