This is probably the only spot in the State of Washington where
on the Memorial Day Weekend you have a campsite waiting for you and there
won't be any Boom Boxes around. The real bonus is the chance to meet a
lot of other folks who are also interested in the outdoors. The field
trips are a great experience as you learn so much from each other. The
wildflowers in the Wenas Creek drainage are prolific and diverse and
about as many "weed watchers" as birders show up each year. We usually
find about 130 species of birds over the weekend and find at least one
surprise species such as Broad-winged Hawk, White-tailed Ptarmigan,
Northern Mockingbird, Black and White Warbler, or American Redstart, each
of which has been seen at least once in the last five years. Least
Flycatcher and Gray Catbird have been annual for the last few years. I
attended my first Campout in 1976 and have tried to be there every year
since then (we had to go to Malhuer instead when Mt. St. Helens erupted).
This is the only Audubon campout like this in the nation and is open to
anyone interested in the outdoors. The only money collected are donations
to a fund for the rental of portable sani-cans.
