Yesterday (Saturday, 5/18/02) I led an Audubon Birdathon field trip to
Eastern Washington. We birded in King, Kittitas, Grant and Adams Counties.
I was joined by John Pauk, Tiffany Kao and Brian Bell. It was truly a group
effort as we obseved 125 species for the day. We met at 5:00AM at the
Issaquah Park and Ride and returned at about 10:00PM. A few of the
highlights:

Common Loon-on the Columbia R at Vantage
Clark's Grebe- O'Sullivan Dam
American White Pelican- 1 ay Para Ponds and 1 on the Col R S of Wanapum Dan
American Bittern- 1 on Dodson Road
Teal- all 4 species at Para Ponds
Canvasback- 1 at Potato Ponds near Othello
Greater Scaup- 1 at Potato Ponds
Red-breasted Merganser- a pair on the Col R at Vantage
Swainson's Hawk- a pair on the nest on Dodson Rd
Sandhill Crane- 4 on Crab Creek Rd
Whimbrel- 1 at Potato Ponds in Adams County
Long-billed Curlew- 1 at Ellensburg and 3 w/ the Whimbrel at Potato Ponds
Lesser Yellowlegs- 1 at Potato Ponds
Pectoral Sandpiper- 3 at ponds on Frontage Rd west of Dodson Rd, s of I90
Wilson's Phalope- 8 (or more) in breeding plumage at above ponds and 4 at
Crab Creek Rd
Red-necked Phalarope- 4 w/ Wilson's at Frontage Rd ponds and 4 at Para Ponds
Forster's Tern- 3 at Vantage
Burrowing Owl- 1 at I90 and 283 and 1 on Frenchman Hills Rd
Lewis's Woodpecker- 1 at Potholes State Park
Pileated Woodpecker- 1 on Hwy 10 near Teanaway
Sage Thrasher- 1 at Quilamene
Vesper, Sage and Brewer's Sparrows-Quilamene
Lark Sparrow- several near Wanapum SP

At Wanapum SP we saw an unusual American Robin. The breast was normal
orange. Otherwise the bird was white. We were told it had been there for a
few weeks.

It was a very good day.
