Hi Tweeters,
Decided to try and find sun and some great birds so I headed
to Central Washington this past weekend. The weather was great except for
some light showers late Saturday over by Electric City. Temperatures were in
the 60's to 70's range with light winds. We clock approx. 700 miles of
driving finding the following birds:
Lincoln Rock State Park (just North of Wenatchee) 6 Yellow-rumped Warblers,
mostly Audabon's race, 2 Western Kingbirds, 4 Bullock's Orioles, 3 Wilson's
Warblers, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, many Brewer's Blackbirds ( found that all over
on our trip) 4 Brown-headed Cowbirds, many swallows, mostly Violet-green,
Tree and Cliff, with 3 Bank Swallows, l Red-brested Nuthatch, and several
Black-headed Grosbeaks.
Steamboat Rock State Park (near Electric City) l Say's Phoebe, l Spotted
Sandpiper, 3 Western Grebes (displaying) l Pied-billed Grebe, l male
Bullock's Oriole, 2 American Widgeon, 8 Ring-billed Gulls, many
White-throated Swifts flying overhead, l imm Bald Eagle, 2 American
Goldfinch, and several Yellow-headed Blackbirds.
Thompson Lake, (just below Steamboat Rock) 5 Ruddy Ducks, 10 Gadwall, 5
Redhead Ducks, 3 American Widgeon, 7 Yellow-headed Blackbirds, 6 Coots, and l
male American Kestral.
Electric City, 3 Western Kingbirds, 2 Yellow Warblers, 1 Dusky Flycatcher, 3
Say's Phoebe, 3 Canyon Wrens, 4 House Wrens (many nesting), 1 Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, and 1 Warbling Vireo.
Spring Canyon Sp (south of Electric City) 3 Western Kingbirds, 10+ Bullock's
Orioles, 4 Western Tanagers, 2 Wilson's Warblers, 2 MacGillivray's Warblers,
5 Warbling Vireos, 8 Western Grebes, 6 Lesser Scaup and l Red-breated
Nuthatch.
Gravel-pit Ponds at the Euphrata/Yakima Junction, 3 Redhead Ducks, 3
Northern Shovellers, 3 Spotted Sandpipers, 5 Avocets, 8 Forester's Terns, 2
Lesser Scaup, l DC Cormorant and many Yellow-headed Blackbirds.
Wanapum Sp, 1 Lark Sparrow, l Willow Flycatcher and 1 3' Rattlesnake!!
The Coal Train Trail in Rosyln, 3 Willow Flycatchers and 1 Hammonds, 3 Rufous
Hummingbirds, many Evening Grosbeaks calling and flying up and down the
trail, plus many Pine Siskins doing the same. Would like to spend more time
birding this area.
