BANDING REPORT- Neawanna Wetland Preserve
23 May 2002

Method: Up to eight 9m mist nets are placed in mixed Oregon
Crabapple/Twinberry/Spruce along the the upper Neawanna River,
Seaside, Clatsop Co. OR. Captured birds are measured, ringed
with USBBL numbered metal bands and released. Data on time of
capture and side of net captured are also recorded to gain
an understanding of movements through the area.

NOTES: It was a generally slow morning, though there was an
obvious early movement of SWAINSON'S THRUSHES.

The bird of the day was a female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, the
first recorded at the Neawanna. While I was removing it from
the net I was struck by the very short bill (12.2mm) and
thought it might be a hatch-year Rufous Hummingbird, but
short tail and rounded rectrices with rufous colors in the
wrong places quickly changed the ID. The bird managed to
escape my grip before I got a complete photo series, but the
tail shot is this week's bird in hand.
