After reading Dave's report of the AVOCET at Nisqually yesterday afternoon,
I made sure to be there early this morning. In the new ponds just west of
the parking area I found the AMERICAN AVOCET feeding along the opposite
shore. Fantastic looking bird! It was still there when I left at 10:30.

I walked the loop 6:30-10:30AM and saw many of the same birds I reported on
Friday, with some notable additions. On the mudflats viewed from the tower
I saw 33 COMMON TERNS standing among the larger CASPIAN TERNS. A short time
later 2 WHIMBREL flew in and with them a large shorebird that had striking
black and white wing markings - a WILLET. This was my first sighting of
this species at the refuge as was the sighting of the AVOCET. What a fine
morning.

The female WILSON's PHALAROPE was still present on the pond in the northwest
corner of the refuge.

Good Birding!
